The Pitbull Tree
A friend of mine called me with a problem, a very basic security problem that required an urgent and unsophisticated solution. The evening before a thief had tried to break into his living room, while he was watching TV with his family.
His apartment was on the first floor of a nice 1920’s building, where, next to the facade, from a nook in the pavement, a nice mature tree had managed to grow over the years, though it had now proved it could become a stairway for intruders.
So I imagined a solution that would save the tree from being chopped down, instill a sense of menace and stop any would-be climber. I thought that a spiky collar would do the job, creating an insurmountable obstacle and effectively conjuring the intimidating aspect of a fierce guard dog.
