Spray Paths (Paris)
One day wandering in Paris, taking a stroll with no particular destination, I came across a group of workers spray painting signs on the sidewalk to indicate the future paths of new utilities.
A few days later, dressed in overalls and with a hard hat, armed with a set of technical-looking drawings and the colour spray cans that are used on building sites, I selected a busy intersection.
The sidewalk became my canvas as I quickly created a series of intertwined fake itineraries, mimicking a soon to open construction site.
Since the painting necessarily needed to be completed in quite a hurry, I had a bunch of preparatory sketches to guide me in achieving my principal aim: a satisfactory aesthetical result.
The drawing was deliberately confusing and some shop owners were quite concerned.
Initially I was unwilling to explain them what was going on, but soon I must confess that I took pleasure in nurturing their worries.
