2008 Cowebs (Combloux)

Can you ask spiders to work for you?
Hiking in the woods of Haute Savoie I marveled at cobwebs with shapes I had never noticed before. They were difficult to photograph, because they were built not to be seen by their preys and there seemed to never be the right conditions of light and shade.
So I imagined what these cobwebs would look like if transplanted outside of their natural surroundings.

I carefully collected the spiders and created a new colony on a topiary I had noticed in a village cemetery. The shrub form was just right: not too edgy, yet unmistakenly shaped by man.
The spiders apparently appreciated their new home and the result was a sort of green, lively skyscraper, surrounded by crafty, sun-catching immaculate nets.

2008 Ragnatele (Combloux)

Puoi convincere i ragni a lavorare per te?
Facendo un’escursione nei boschi dell’Alta Savoia mi sono meravigliato di ragnatele con forme che non avevo mai notato prima. Erano difficili da fotografare, perché erano costruite per non essere viste dalle loro prede e sembravano non esserci mai le giuste condizioni di luce e ombra.
Quindi ho immaginato come sarebbero queste ragnatele se trapiantate al di fuori del loro ambiente naturale.

Raccolsi con cura i ragni e creai una nuova colonia su una topiaria che avevo notato in un cimitero di villaggio. La forma ad arbusto era giusta: non troppo spigolosa, ma inconfondibilmente modellata dall’uomo.
Apparentemente i ragni hanno apprezzato la loro nuova casa e il risultato è stato una sorta di grattacielo verde e vivace, circondato da reti immacolate che catturano la luce solare.
