2016 Chalet on the Roof (Rome)

Once upon a time there was a building in prime location in the EUR business district. It sat as an abandoned empty frame for many years, until the office building next door was leased to a company that had hired our architectural practice to renovate their facilities.
As a consequence the landlord of the derelict frame was summoned to find a quick way to conceal his eyesore property.

Half jokingly I suggested a green roof with a garden pavilion in the middle.
My proposal was accepted.
However the available budget was far too meagre and it had to be zero maintenance.
I revised the design accordingly to create a kind of mock movie stage, with a meadow of plastic grass and, in the middle, an unpretentious suburban pavilion, with printed fake roof tiles, fake brick walls, fake blinds.
Only the letterbox (yes, there is one by the fake door) is real!

An intervention that should have been purely cosmetic has turned into an ironic installation where the fake vernacular architecture of the suburban working-class is encrusted in the midst of the marbles of Mussolini’s monuments and the crystal parallelepipeds of the real estate speculators.

2016 La casetta sul tetto (Roma)

C’era una volta un edificio abbandonato in una posizione privilegiata nel cuore del quartiere degli affari all’EUR. Rimase lì per anni, una struttura vuota e derelitta, finché il contiguo edificio per uffici venne affittato a una società, che ci aveva dato l’incarico di progettare la loro sede. Il proprietario del confinante edificio abbandonato venne convocato per concordare una soluzione su come nascondere in fretta quel pugno nell’occhio.

Per scherzo suggerii un tetto verde con nel mezzo un padiglione da giardino.
La mia proposta fu accettata.
Peccato che il budget a disposizione fosse del tutto insufficiente e si dovesse trovare una soluzione con zero manutenzione.
Ho ripensato il progetto trasformandolo in una sorta di set teatrale: al centro di un prato di erba finta una casetta di borgata, con tegole del tetto stampate, mattoni, persiane e porta d’ingresso anch’essi fasulli.
Solo la cassetta delle lettere è reale!

Un intervento che avrebbe dovuto essere puramente di cosmesi si è trasformato in un’ironica installazione dove l’architettura vernacolare del borgataro si è incrostata in mezzo ai marmi del Ventennio e ai cristalli dei parallelepipedi dei palazzinari.
