2000 Mangroves on Parade

In Mauritius, as I drove along the South-Western coast, a picturesque spot caught my attention. I stopped the car and took a couple of photos.

The sea was eroding the island’s only saltworks. Cleverly, rather than building costly and disruptive earthworks, a simpler and ecological solution had been found in planting mangrove trees.
Being late, I just went on, but three of four kilometers later I realized I was missing an opportunity. And I drove back.
With the help of a modest tip I convinced the workers to plant the remaining mangrove saplings in orderly rows, like soldiers on a parade ground.

In the late afternoon I rushed back to be there before sunset, as I wouldn’t have another chance to visit the place.
I was lucky: my little green soldiers looked good.
I took a few pictures and waited for the high tide and was rewarded by a rainbow.

2000 Mangrovie in parata

A Mauritius, mentre guidavo lungo la costa sud-occidentale, un sito particolarmente pittoresco ha attirato la mia attenzione. Mi sono fermato, il tempo di scattare un paio di foto.
Il mare stava erodendo l’unica salina dell’isola e intelligentemente, piuttosto che costruire terrapieni costosi e dirompenti, era stata adottata la soluzione più semplice ed ecologica di piantare mangrovie.
In ritardo, sulla mia tabella di marcia, ho ripreso il mio itinerario, ma dopo tre chilometri mi sono reso conto che mi stavo perdendo un’opportunità. E sono tornato indietro.

Con l’aiuto di una modesta mancia ho convinto gli operai a piantare i restanti alberelli di mangrovia in file ordinate, quasi fossero soldati in parata.

Nel tardo pomeriggio sono tornato di corsa per arrivare prima del tramonto, dato che non avrei avuto un’altra possibilità di tornare sul posto.
Sono stato fortunato: i miei soldatini verdi si presentavano decisamente bene.
Ho scattato qualche foto, ho aspettato l’alta marea e sono stato ricompensato con un arcobaleno.
